Witching — Matias Boettner

Witching is a hand-painted comic book that tells the story of an unlikely friendship between Emma, a curious 10-year-old girl, and Ilsa, a 30-year-old witch trying (and mostly failing) to blend into human society. As the two navigate city life, magic, and growing pains from very different ends of the age spectrum, Witching explores themes of loneliness, connection, family and what it means to be different—with plenty of humor and heart.

The entire comic is created analog—each panel is drawn and painted by hand, with only the lettering and final text added digitally after scanning. This tactile process is central to the feel of the work, giving it a raw, expressive texture that matches the emotional tone of the story.

Witching was awarded the Arbeitsstipendium des Landes Berlin im Bereich Comic 2025, a grant that has made it financially possible for me to focus on its creation.
